This volume’s goal is to provide readers with up-to-date information on the research and theory of scientific text comprehension. It is widely acknowledged that the comprehension of science and technological artifacts is very difficult for both children and adults. The material is conceptually complex, there is very little background knowledge for most individuals, and the materials are often poorly written. Therefore, it is no surprise that students are turned off from learning science and technology. Given these challenges, it is important to design scientific text in a fashion that fits the cognitive constraints of the learner. The enterprise of textbook design needs to be effectively integrated with research in discourse processing, educational technology, and cognitive science. This book takes a major step in promoting such an integration.

This volume:
*provides an important integration of research and theory with theoretical, methodological, and educational applications;
*includes a number of chapters that cover how science text information affects mental representations and strategies;
*introduces important suggestions about how text design and new technologies can be thought of as pedagogical features; and
*establishes academic text taxonomies and a consensus of the criteria to organize inferences and other mental mechanisms.

“Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model of something that was almost completely lacking in Western psychology–an account of the development phases of higher consciousness…. Jung’s insistence on the psychogenic and symbolic significance of such states is even more timely now than then. As R. D. Laing stated… ‘It was Jung who broke the ground here, but few followed him.’”–From the introduction by Sonu Shamdasani
Jung’s seminar on Kundalini yoga, presented to the Psychological Club in Zurich in 1932, has been widely regarded as a milestone in the psychological understanding of Eastern thought and of the symbolic transformations of inner experience. Kundalini yoga presented Jung with a model for the developmental phases of higher consciousness, and he interpreted its symbols in terms of the process of individuation. With sensitivity toward a new generation’s interest in alternative religions and psychological exploration, Sonu Shamdasani has brought together the lectures and discussions from this seminar. In this volume, he re-creates for today’s reader the fascination with which many intellectuals of prewar Europe regarded Eastern spirituality as they discovered more and more of its resources, from yoga to tantric texts. Reconstructing this seminar through new documentation, Shamdasani explains, in his introduction, why Jung thought that the comprehension of Eastern thought was essential if Western psychology was to develop. He goes on to orient today’s audience toward an appreciation of some of the questions that stirred the minds of Jung and his seminar group: What is the relation between Eastern schools of liberation and Western psychotherapy? What connection is there between esoteric religious traditions and spontaneous individual experience? What light do the symbols of Kundalini yoga shed on conditions diagnosed as psychotic? Not only were these questions important to analysts in the 1930s but, as Shamdasani stresses, they continue to have psychological relevance for readers on the threshold of the twenty-first century. This volume also offers newly translated material from Jung’s German language seminars, a seminar by the indologist Wilhelm Hauer presented in conjunction with that of Jung, illustrations of the cakras, and Sir John Woodroffe’s classic translation of the tantric text, the Sat-cakra Nirupana.

CAN A WOMAN BE SMART, EMPOWERED, AND HAPPY ?

Happiness has become a serious business. Where twentiethcentury psychology focused on depression and illness, in the new millennium scientists have begun focusing on “positive psychology”—the study of happiness. Ariel Gore first became intrigued by this subject when she discovered that Positive Psychology was the most popular course on the Harvard campus. As she read deeper into the topic, she noticed something disturbing: everyone in this happy land was a man. Worse still, some of these new “experts” seemed hell-bent on proving that women with traditional values and breadwinning husbands—those who had made “an effort to expect less,” according to one sociologist—were more content than women with feminist values. The more she read the more she wondered: Can a woman be smart, empowered, and happy? Determined to find out, Gore began her own “study in living”— a journey into the feminine history, science, and experience of happiness. Her results, chronicled with humor and curiosity in Bluebird, are by turns fascinating and enriching. A woman’s happiness may not come easy, and it may not take the forms prescribed by popular culture. But, as Gore discovers, it is not only possible but necessary. Bluebird is a smart, no-nonsense, uplifting study of the real secret of joy, and whether it’s truly at odds with the goals of modern women.

Written in a personally revealing manner, this book is excellent for people interested in learning the basics of Green Psychology. It is appropriate for professionals and laypeople alike. The book introduces the reader to the principles of Green Psychology while also teaching how to use Green Speak, a new way to use language that stimulates higher consciousness. The book is written as a conversation between two people, the author and his brother who was recently diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Their relationship-and the conversation they have-is the basis for an exploration of Green Psychology, Green Speak, and existential issues including: how to live a meaningful life, how to respectfully relate with other people, how to reduce anxiety, and how to deal with our inevitable death and those of the people we love. Although the name Green Psychology is new, it’s roots are deep. In 1960 a little known movement was started. The leaders were John Weir, PhD and Joyce Weir. The members were people committed to creating a better world-for themselves and for others. The crucial characteristic that distinguished this movement from the mainstream was a new way of using language. Why have you not heard of this movement? Because one of its tenets is that one person never imposes their ideas on another person. Therefore, the people involved in this worthy cause didn’t proselytize. Word spread, not by telling others what they should do, but by others witnessing positive changes in the behaviors of those using this language. By the year 2000, as we entered a new century, and the challenges, conflicts, and crises in the world were ever increasing, the Weirs invited two of their colleagues to “go public” with the knowledge their movement was built upon. Jake and Hannah Eagle have held true to the origins of the Weir’s philosophy, while creating a new, more accessible, and timely presentation-a new psychology: Green Psychology. It is a a way of life-an actual practice-that fosters greater personal joy, healthier adult/adult connections, while also creating a kinder and saner world to live in.

• A resource for therapists to give to their clients.
• Clear instructions for bringing about quick and powerful changes in emotions, thoughts and behavior patterns.
• Learn the basic steps for addressing specific problems and goals, for uplifting your mood and optimizing your energy.
Originally written for the clients of psychotherapists who used the acclaimed Energy Psychology Interactive program, this small self-help guide is proving itself to be a powerful, user-friendly introduction for anyone wishing to learn the important methods offered by energy psychology.
Energy psychology brings a new genre of tools for facilitating desired changes in emotions, thought, and patterns of behavior. While it introduces unfamiliar methods and ideas, such as the notion that psychological patterns are coded not only in your neurons but also in your energies (the approach draws heavily from the principles of acupuncture), evidence of its effectiveness is growing.
Energy Psychology Interactive has been reviewed, revised, and endorsed by 26 recognized leaders and innovators within the field of energy psychology, who comprise its primary consultants and formal Advisory Board.
A Prototype of Energy Psychology Interactive, the version for psychotherapists, received the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology (ACEP) “Outstanding Contribution Award” for 2002.

The Child That Haunts Us focuses on the symbolic use of the child archetype through the exploration of miniature characters from the realms of children’s literature.

Jung argued that the child archetype should never be mistaken for the ‘real’ child. In this book Susan Hancock considers how the child is portrayed in literature and fairytale and explores the suggestion from Jung and Bachelard that the symbolic resonance of the miniature is inversely proportionate to its size.

We encounter many instances where the miniature characters are a visibly vulnerable ‘other’, yet often these occur in association with images of the supernatural, as the desired or feared object of adult imagination. In The Child That Haunts Us it is emphasised that the treatment by any society, past or present, of its smallest and most vulnerable members is truly revealing of the values it really holds.

This original and sensitive exploration will be of particular interest to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as academics engaged in Jungian studies, children’s literature, childhood studies and those with an interest in socio-cultural constructions of childhood.

Someday computers will be artists. They’ll be able to write amusing and original stories, invent and play games of unsurpassed complexity and inventiveness, tell jokes and suffer writer’s block. But these things will require computers that can both achieve artistic goals and be creative. Both capabilities are far from accomplished.

This book presents a theory of creativity that addresses some of the many hard problems which must be solved to build a creative computer. It also presents an exploration of the kinds of goals and plans needed to write simple short stories. These theories have been implemented in a computer program called MINSTREL which tells stories about King Arthur and his knights. While far from being the silicon author of the future, MINSTREL does illuminate many of the interesting and difficult issues involved in constructing a creative computer.

The results presented here should be of interest to at least three different groups of people. Artificial intelligence researchers should find this work an interesting application of symbolic AI to the problems of story-telling and creativity. Psychologists interested in creativity and imagination should benefit from the attempt to build a detailed, explicit model of the creative process. Finally, authors and others interested in how people write should find MINSTREL’s model of the author-level writing process thought-provoking.

In this fresh and often playful interdisciplinary study, Lisa Zunshine presents a fluid discussion of how key concepts from cognitive science complicate our cultural interpretations of “strange” literary phenomena.

From Short Circuit to I, Robot, from The Parent Trap to Big Business, fantastic tales of rebellious robots, animated artifacts, and twins mistaken for each other are a permanent fixture in popular culture and have been since antiquity. Why do these strange concepts captivate the human imagination so thoroughly? Zunshine explores how cognitive science, specifically its ideas of essentialism and functionalism, combined with historical and cultural analysis, can help us understand why we find such literary phenomena so fascinating.

Drawing from research by such cognitive evolutionary anthropologists and psychologists as Scott Atran, Paul Bloom, Pascal Boyer, and Susan A. Gelman, Zunshine examines the cognitive origins of the distinction between essence and function and how unexpected tensions between these two concepts are brought into play in fictional narratives. Discussing motifs of confused identity and of twins in drama, science fiction’s use of robots, cyborgs, and androids, and nonsense poetry and surrealist art, she reveals the range and power of key concepts from science in literary interpretation and provides insight into how cognitive-evolutionary research on essentialism can be used to study fiction as well as everyday strange concepts.

Spiritual life is a process of inner transformation in which the whole psychic structure of the seeker is changed. Exploring the threshold between psychology and spirituality, Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee shows how dreamwork guides us on this inner journey and helps us to understand the different stages of the path. He explores the psychological dynamics of the relationship with the teacher, so often misunderstood in the West, and then describes what is hardly mentioned in the great spiritual literature of the world: how the soul of the disciple merges with the soul of the teacher. This book is a reedited version of The Call and the Echo, combined with some of the most important material from the author’s first book, The Lover and the Serpent.
Acknowledging that literacy revolutionizes the human thought world, and maintaining the validity of exploring the psychological content of traditional literature, a specific psychic preoccupation is identified in Malory’s work: namely, man’s struggle to accommodate the conflicting demands of his divided self.

Is Goldilocks a manipulator?

Do Hansel and Gretel have abandonment issues?

And what happens after “happily ever after” anyway?

Therapist Sue Gallehugh and her son Allen adapt classic fairy tales to illustrate the fundamental principles of self-love through mental health and psychological growth. Through wit and humor, these tales tackle serious issues such as anger, isolation, taking responsibility, bitterness, labeling, emotional boundaries, staying connected, abandonment, manipulation, fear and forgiveness. This little gem of a book cuts through the dreary mire of conventional self-help books to help you discover real solutions to the common problems that prevent us from growing.

    You’ll laugh out loud while reading “The Low Self-Esteem Duckling,” “Cinderella, Inc.,” “Little Red in the Hood,” “Jack the Beanstalker,” “The Third Little Pig” and more. A truly delightful book!
It also makes available passages of stylistic analysis whose value has been partially recognized by their inclusion in some anthologies. Finally, it shows how strikingly Lee anticipates some of the developments in contemporary criticism, for instance the role of the reader as co-creator.

This volume focuses on Aristotle’s practical philosophy. His analysis of emotional response takes pride of place. It is followed by discussion of his moral psychology: the division of the human soul into emotional and deliberative parts.
Moral virtue is studied in relation to emotion, and animals are shown to lack both emotion and virtue. Different kinds of friendship are analyzed, and the effects of vehemence, i.e., temperament are given special attention. Aristotle’s justification for assigning natural slaves and women subordinate roles receives detailed consideration. The same is true of his analysis of correct and incorrect constitutions. Finally, persuasion is taken up from several angles including Aristotle’s emphasis on the presentation of character and his curious dismissal of delivery in speech.
